If you, like me, miss bookstores, then you might also miss stumping your local bookseller. As much as I miss movie theatres, I also — thanks to the pointless algorithm of any streaming service — find myself yearning for that shelf of recommendations in a video store. The deeper we get into lockdown and curationism, the more these algorithms seem to miss the mark. To put it simply: I just want a recommendation that has nothing to do with brand strategy, old viewing patterns, or current coping strategies. I just want to know what people like when they know others aren’t watching. This isn’t just nosiness, but desperation.
To that end, I’d love to hear what you’re currently watching, or what you keep coming back to no matter the climate or mood. Or not! Perhaps you, like me, consider Sea of Love’s optimal viewing season to be the dead of summer, when it’s so hot you’ll run into any convenience store just to linger in front of freezers. Whatever it is you want me and others to see, you can now add here along with comments. In the meantime, you can start with Martin Scorsese’s list. And if you are yearning for that video store experience, may I suggest The Last Blockbuster or scrolling through the next set of images/suggestions?
